I always swore up and down that while I enjoyed my childhood, there was no way I was going to go off grid like that, or homeschool my future kids. Moving to a property bordering my parents certainly never crossed my mind as a possibility.

It started as a “joke” of an idea. I can’t remember how it came about. I think my mom brought it up, and Keith kept saying – “but wouldn’t that be cool?”

Keith and I had talked constantly about our desire to homestead and become self sufficient, to raise our kids in a non-traditional (or rather, traditional, depending on your definition) way. We’d looked at moving up north or out of state to make these dreams come true, but hadn’t quite find the right place. When Luke was born, it seemed even more difficult to stomach the idea of moving away.
But having Luke changed a lot of things – for one, I always swore I’d never be a stay at home mom. I’d worked hard on my career and no interest in “throwing it away.” Once I held him – and spent some time at work – I knew working full time wasn’t the right choice for me and my family.

So we talked to my parents to see if they were serious about us “buying the back forty.” And they were. So we said yes.
We sold our house in town. We moved into my parents house. And we are working on building our dream home and property.
