Build update: Footings set, stem wall is next

After some dicey days of rescheduling the inspector and concrete truck, our footings were finally approved and the concrete truck came out today to pour our first round of concrete (the footings).

Freshly poured footing.

Much like our own feet, the footing is the part of the house that comes in contact with the soil. Footings help prevent movement or settling. The concrete is reinforced with rebar to make it stronger. The footings will be covered with backfill dirt.

The next part of the puzzle is the stem wall, which connects the footing to the walls. Think about the stem of a flower, connecting the roots to the head of the flower. The stem wall helps create a stable base for the home. This will also enclose the crawlspace.

They will begin using ICF forms to create the stem wall; Keith will be going to learn and help out tomorrow.
