Build update: foundation nearly finished

It’s wild to think that our foundation is nearly complete — it’s almost unreal to wrap my mind around the fact that we’re really doing this. Of course, we’ve been “really doing this” for the last six months, but this tangible outcome really feels like a step in the right direction.

Stem wall, pre-concrete.

The stem wall is nearly done; the stem wall is the bit that connects the footing to the house walls. It lays flush with the ground and is to be buried with backfill (the extra dirt and rocks from digging out the foundation hole).

We learned a valuable lesson with this inspection: business days are a ‘thing’. We work a job where we don’t have traditional weekends, so it’s easy to forget that others do. Long story short, we realized too late on a Friday that we didn’t schedule our inspection for Monday, so it ended up getting pushed to Tuesday. Also, these things aren’t set in stone and we have to be flexible. The inspection was pushed to Wednesday because our inspector was on the other side of the county. Then it got pushed to today.

Our future garage!

We passed our inspection today, which was a relief. We did end up pushing out concrete until Monday; our flooring subcontractor came out today and had a good suggestion about our crawlspace height. If we reduce it six inches, we can save ourselves a whole row of ICF blocks ($$). So, we’re looking into that this weekend. We aren’t in a huge rush to pour, as our flooring guys don’t come out until Wednesday anyway.

We are now in a bit of a holding pattern; we have a crew coming out to install floor joists and flooring before we get moving on the exterior wall. We still have plenty of auxiliary projects to work on (our boujee dog house, firewood storage, etc.)

The massive insulated dog house Keith is working on.
