Build Update: Pour Ponderings

I was young – 8 or 9 – when my parents taught me the meaning of Murphy’s Law. That was probably the age I also learned the word “facetious” — which is a nicer, more intelligent way of saying “sarcastic” or “smartass” — both of which could also be used to describe me from a young age.

We decided to build a house during a record breaking winter.

I digress from these critical homeschool vocabulary lessons.

This project has been wrought with Murphy’s Law instances – if you’re not familiar with Murphy, it’s the idea that anything that can go wrong will go wrong. Maybe this is why I perpetually stress and come up with Plans A, B and C? Do I need therapy? I might need therapy.

All six courses up.

I’ve lost count of how many times we’ve said the words “we’re hoping to pour next week”. I thought I’d try a new tactic and wait to release a blog update that says we are pouring this week, in an effort to trick whatever has been at play lately (the weather). So far, it’s worked: we’re a go for Wednesday. We’ve got enough helping hands (my brother came down from Bend and Keith’s dad is coming out, too) and by the end of the day on Wednesday, our walls should be setting up and on the road to curing. We passed inspection last week, too.

Fun fact: it actually takes years for the concrete to fully cure.

Right now, the block is completely stacked. But the to do list doesn’t stop there: measurements are being constantly checked and rechecked to make sure everything is plum and level, reinforcements are being made to window and door bucks, reinforcements are being added to seams, and so much more. This is to ensure we don’t have concrete blowouts and the structure is sound.

We have a lot to do before Wednesday, but we’re thankful the weather has been dry and relatively nice compared to the last six months.
